The Super Ballon d'Or is an award given to the best football player of the last 50 years, from 1956 to 2006, as determined by a private ballot of journalists. It was created in 1989 to celebrate the 35th anniversary of the Ballon d'Or, which was itself a yearly award given by France Football magazine to the best male footballer in Europe. The Super Ballon d'Or is considered one of the most prestigious individual awards in football history, with winners including Pele, Michel Platini, Diego Maradona, Johan Cruyff, and Lionel Messi. The award has not been given since 2006, with France Football magazine opting to create a new award called the Ballon d'Or Dream Team in 2020 instead.
